Best Longboard Bearings 2023
Jimi Carson Feb 4, 2023 12:02 PM
Bearings have the most impact on the operation of a longboard. There's no getting around the fact that bad bearings equal bad rides. A decent pair of quick bearings will instantly improve the way a new rider skates, whether you're constructing a complete from the ground up or improving the lousy bearings that came with an off-the-shelf complete.
Skateboarding was permanently revolutionized when these wheels replaced the old, loose-bearing design with precise bearings. Skateboards with urethane and precise bearings are quicker, more responsive, and more pleasant to ride than those with clay or steel wheels and loose bearings. Today I’m going to show you some tips when choosing the best longboard bearings in 2022

How longboard bearings work:
Bearings are made up of four major parts that work together to keep things rotating. Bearings are simply steel balls that roll along a track. Two steel rings, referred to as races, make up the track. An inner race and an outside race exist.
The inner race of the bearing is the component of the bearing that makes contact with the truck's axles. A groove has been cut into the outside part of this race. Of course, the outer race has a wider circumference. It has a groove carved into the interior part.
The steel balls roll along these two courses, kept in place by a cage that also maintains a precise spacing between them.

When choosing longboard bearings:
Shield-carrying
Bearing shields are the bearing's outside walls. They're the shields that keep dirt and debris from the exterior from getting into the bearings and clogging them up — think of all the dust, water, and muck you experience when riding. Shields are a critical component of the bearing.
Rubber and Metal Shields
Bearing shields are normally one of two sorts. A metal shield (typically rubber coated) is found on certain bearings, whereas a rubber shield is found on others.
Metal shields are sometimes detachable, and sometimes they aren't. The shields on less expensive bearings are frequently not detachable. Rubber shields are easier to clean than metal shields. Both varieties are effective at keeping debris out, but both let moisture in.
Shields of the Labyrinth
Metal shields that fit into a groove on the racetrack are known as labyrinth shields. In comparison to the other two forms, this style closes the space between the race and the shield. It keeps moisture and dirt out of the bearings, allowing them to live longer.
The bearing will experience some drag as a result of this design, but the effect will be minimal in practice. Precision bearings can handle tens of thousands of RPM, which is far faster than skateboards. This shield design has been adopted by some of the greatest companies (Bronson, Bones Swiss, and so on).

Built-in Bearings
Everything is included with built-in bearings. The inner race is extended and serves as both a spacer and a washer. This eliminates the need for all of the extra pieces in your wheel. Built-in bearings, in my experience, make things a lot simpler. There's no need to worry about misplacing washers or spacers, and replacing the wheels or cleaning the bearings is a breeze.
Materials for longboard bearings:
Steel
Steel is the most prevalent skateboard bearing material, despite some manufacturers' claims of space-age metals. In a high-quality skateboard bearing, the balls, races, shields, and retaining rings can all be constructed of steel. Steel bearings are the toughest and most durable.
Synthetics
Some parts that were originally made entirely of steel are now made of nylon, rubber, or other synthetic materials. Cages are nearly always built of sturdy polymers now, as steel cages may flex. Shields are frequently made of rubber-coated steel or a synthetic material.
Ceramics
Steel is still used to make the majority of ceramic bearings. The balls, which are normally constructed of silicon nitride, are the only ceramic component. Steel is heavier, tougher, and smoother than this substance. There is also less friction since it does not expand when heated.
Compared to steel balls, ceramic bearings require less lubrication. Rust is also less of a concern than it is with steel-ball bearings. Because of their hardness, they can crush invading particles and clean and polish the races as they are used.
Some bearings are quick but short-lived. Others rattle and shake their way down the road indefinitely, but offer nothing in the way of thrill — or acceleration. Bones Reds are the only way to go if you want the best of both worlds. They may not be the quickest bearings in the world, but they are quick and quiet.
None of them outlast the others in terms of longevity. When compared to the value you get from Reds, the additional expenditures for other bearings are insignificant. Bones Reds are undoubtedly the greatest skateboard bearing on the market, in our opinion.
